Naja, ganz ausserirdisch ist das Label dann doch nicht. Ihr Zuhause ist die wunderschöne Stadt Genf. Seit gut 3 Jahren werden auf Brainwaves hauptsächlich Produktionen von den fünf Hauptakteuren HTN, Hermeth, Estebahn, Weith und Tout Casser. Dazu kommen noch Thomas Bodenständig und Brian, die Aufgrund ihrer schlechten Entscheidungsfähigkeit aus operativem rausgehalten werden, so Geroge Sims aka Estebahn.
Q: How did brainwaves start and who’s involved?
A: Brainwaves is a multinational extra-terrestrial music conglomerate whose board of directors is made up of the five main artists: HTN; Hermeth; Estebahn; Weith and Tout Casser. Additional members include a degenerate West German producer named Thomas Bodenständig and a hovering alien companion named Brian, neither of whom is capable of rational decision-making, which is why we exclude them from all major label-related discussions, although they are a lot of fun on a night out.
Die fünf Residents auf Brainwaves zeigen auf ihrem Label mit jedem Release eine neue Seite von sich – alles in allem kann man den Sound aber dem Elektro zuordnen. Auch wenn es ab und zu einen Abstecher zum IDM, oder EDM gibt. Zumal Elektro nie komplett von der Bildfläche verschwunden ist, erlebt das Label in der letzten Zeit einen Aufschwung, eine zweite Welle, wenn man so will.
Q: Elektro is having some sort of “comeback“ (although it was never gone), why do you think it catches the attention of people again?
A: We think people may be getting bored with the predominance of 4/4 beats and over the past few years it felt like the masses were re-discovering the subaquatic groove. There are also a lot of brilliant artists old and new that have done a lot to bring the style back to the forefront of the scene, such as Stingray, Helena Hauff, Solid Blake, Volruptus, Jensen Interceptor, Gesloten Cirkel and loads of others.
Damit ist Brainwaves in Genf sicher in guten Händen. Schliesslich zeigen Klubs wie La Gravière, Motel Campo und Le Zoo/Usine, dass im Nachtleben mehr als eben die 4/4 Beats platz finden. Zu dieser guten Gesellschaft gehören für Brainwaves auch die lokalen Machtakteure, wie korrupte Banken, die UN und das CERN.
Q: Since you’re a multinational Label, how important is it for you to be anchored locally/how do you achieve that?
A: Despite various origins we are all based in Geneva (with the exception of Thomas and Brian), so we are quite a locally anchored outfit. As non-natives to this planet we haven’t yet developed an attachment to the place as a whole, although we have discovered a number of interesting characters in the Romandie region and in Switzerland as a whole, and after a few years in the region a certain affection and respect for our first human interlocutors has been able to grow within our collective. We believe that any project with a solid local base and a long-term vision will always be better than pursuing trends and seeking rapid expansion. Our long-term objectives involve geopolitical disorder, scientific disaster on a global scale and total financial collapse, so we are pretty happy to be surrounded by the UN, CERN and a number of the worlds most influential and corruptible banks.
